As a photographer I always give my couples the option of picking a location for your session…somewhere that mirrors your style as a couple. In other words, I want you to choose to the location for you session. If you are drawing a blank, I can give you some options and tips for choosing the perfect spot for showing off your engagement to the world.

TIP #1 – Location choices

I hinted at this a bit in the introduction above but ideally you want to choose a location that mirrors your style as individuals and as a couple. If you love spending the weekends outdoors fishing together then I would suggest a location located near water. If you are a couple who enjoys walking through stores and eating at outdoor cafes, I would suggest the Downtown/city location. Are you homebodies? Let’s do an in-home session showing how casual you are. We can do multiple locations if you are a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

TIP #2 – Romantic outfits

This is Tip #2, but also Step #2 after deciding on the location – choosing your outfits. I believe no matter the location, you should choose outfits that evoke romance. A soft, pastel palette is best. I have another blog post on choosing your outfit that you can read here.

A flowing cocktail dress that allows for movement photographs so well and gives a little something extra in your pictures. Paired with a tailored suit and nice dress shoes for him is nothing short of romantic.

A flowing cocktail dress and tailored suite are a perfect combination for your engagement pictures.

TIP #3 – Crowd control

How busy is your location of choice? When picking a location for your session think about how many people may be in the background. We shoot our session approximately 2 hours before sunset so we will need to determine if your location will be too busy for shooting. The less distractions, the better.

TIP #4 – Permits or fees

Be aware that some locations require a photography permit or fee to enter. It is best to call ahead and ask to be prepared.

A couples engagement session at Kiroli Park in West Monroe requires a fee to enter the grounds.

Planning for a session can feel daunting, especially if you’re planning a wedding at the same time. But thankfully, you don’t have to do it alone! And I’m here to help along the way….feel free to send over your clothing options if you would like a second opinion!
