Lifestyle is a mix of documentary (capturing what is happening with no posing or instruction) and traditional (heavy newborn posing with sleeping baby) photography. Lifestyle newborn focuses on the connection with baby and family and captures what it is like to have a new baby in the home. It's meaningful, natural, and simple.
There are a few reasons I choose to not do traditional posing.
1 - I want to keep your baby safe. Some poses, in my opinion, are not natural for a baby to do by themselves so I don't put them in those type of poses. But with that being said, there are some super talented traditional newborn photographers in our area (if that is what you are wanting) that I can recommend.
2 - I value the simplicity of newborns just as they are in their natural environment. Also, I consider myself a minimalist and that is reflected in my photography style.
3 - Traditional posing works best when a lot of things line up perfectly...baby is asleep, the room is set to a warm temperature, baby has a full belly, etc. What if things aren't going as planned? This is stressful to me and sometimes to mom and baby. I believe babies belong in his or her parent's arms being snuggled, held, and comfortable.
Myself and my camera bag. I do not use props. I will use your favorite blanket to swaddle, but that's about it.
My lifestyle newborn sessions take place in your home. When I arrive, I will tour your home and find the room with the best window light (master bedroom, nursery, guest bedroom). It may not be what you expected and we will probably stay there the entire session. If we are not in the nursery, I will still take photos of it for your gallery.
Yes, I will tell you where to sit/stand for the best light and what to do with your hands, etc. I will be directing you to snuggle your baby close and how to position them in your arms. As far as posing your baby, they are in charge of our session. If your baby is not happy with a pose, we will not do it. Also, when your baby is hungry, we will stop and let you feed him/her.
I have 2 words for you: Neutrals & Comfortable. Here is a Pinterest board for clothing ideas - but keep it simple. Leggings and a neutral shirt for mom, Tshirt and jeans for dad...it's that easy. I recommend shirts to be plain with no logos or heavy design. Your baby should wear a solid color, neutral onesie that fits snug. Think along the lines of a cozy Sunday morning.
Your newborn session will be around 1.5-2 hours. This accounts for any feedings or soothing that will take place.
Yes, but only if you want me to.
