Choosing your wedding photographer can feel a little overwhelming. There are so many talented photographers, different styles, packages, and approaches to choose from.
After photographing weddings for more than 12 years, I’ve learned that finding the right photographer is about much more than loving a few beautiful images online. You should love their work, of course, but you should also trust their experience, feel comfortable around them, and understand what working with them will actually look like.
If you’re planning a wedding in Brandon, Jackson, Madison, Flowood, or elsewhere in Central Mississippi, here are a few things I’d recommend considering before you book.

Every photographer approaches weddings differently, and understanding photography styles can help you narrow down your search.
Some photographers focus on light and airy imagery, while others prefer a more dramatic or editorial style. Some emphasize candid storytelling while others create more guided portraits.
As you browse portfolios, pay attention to which images resonate with you emotionally. The style you’re drawn to will likely be the one you’ll love most when looking back at your wedding photos years from now.
While highlight images on social media or websites can be beautiful, it’s also important to review full wedding galleries when choosing a photographer. A full gallery shows how a photographer captures the entire day—from getting ready and ceremony moments to family portraits and reception celebrations.
This helps couples see consistency, storytelling ability, and how the photographer handles different lighting situations throughout the wedding day. Pay attention to the parts of the day when conditions aren’t perfect, too. A beautiful portrait during golden hour is one thing. Photographing a dark church ceremony, a rainy afternoon, or a reception with difficult lighting is something completely different.
You want to know that your photographer can create consistent work throughout the entire day, not just under ideal conditions.

Wedding days move quickly and often include unexpected moments. I’ve photographed weddings for more than 12 years, and one thing I’ve learned is that very few wedding days go exactly according to schedule.
And that’s completely normal.
Hair and makeup may run a little late. It might rain. Someone will disappear right when it’s time for family portraits. The ceremony lighting may be tricky. Plans change.
Experience means knowing how to adjust without making those things feel like a crisis.
Your photographer isn’t only there to take beautiful photographs. They should be able to solve problems, work well with your other vendors, help keep things moving, and know when to step in and when to simply let a moment happen.
Most importantly, I think your photographer should bring a sense of calm to your wedding day instead of adding more stress to it.
Your photographer will spend a significant portion of your wedding day with you—from getting ready in the morning to the celebration in the evening.
Because of this, personality and connection matter just as much as photography style.
Many couples find it helpful to schedule a consultation call before booking to ensure they feel comfortable and confident with their photographer.
When couples feel relaxed and supported, it naturally results in more authentic photographs. Your photographer doesn’t need to become your new best friend, but you should feel like you can relax and be yourself around them. That comfort really does show in your photographs.

Many wedding photographers include engagement sessions in their collections, and these sessions are a wonderful opportunity for couples to get comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding day.
Engagement sessions also allow photographers to learn how couples interact with each other and what helps them feel most natural during portraits.

Wedding photography collections can vary depending on coverage hours, number of photographers, and additional services such as albums or engagement sessions.
Not every wedding needs the same amount of photography coverage. A smaller church wedding and dinner reception may need something completely different from a large wedding with several locations and a full reception.
I would much rather help a couple choose the coverage that makes sense for their wedding than automatically tell everyone they need the largest collection available.
When reviewing pricing information, it can be helpful to consider what matters most to you. Some couples prefer more hours of coverage, while others value heirloom albums or additional portrait sessions.
Choosing a collection that aligns with your priorities helps ensure you’ll have the experience and final images you envision.

Before booking your photographer, it’s always a good idea to ask questions that help you understand their process and approach.
Some helpful questions include:
Clear communication helps couples feel confident and prepared leading up to the wedding day.
My approach to wedding photography focuses on capturing genuine moments while also creating timeless portraits that reflect the emotion of the day. Based in Brandon, Mississippi, I photograph weddings throughout Jackson, Madison, Flowood, and Central Mississippi.
Ultimately, the right wedding photographer is someone whose work you love and whose presence makes you feel comfortable and confident. By the time your wedding day arrives, you shouldn’t be worrying about whether your photographer is getting the shot.
You should be walking down the aisle. Hugging your grandmother. Laughing with your bridesmaids. Listening to the toast. Dancing with your new husband.
You should be living your wedding day.
Your photographer should be paying attention to the photographs.
When you trust the person you’ve hired, you’re able to stop thinking about the camera and actually enjoy what’s happening around you. And in my experience, that’s when some of the very best photographs happen.
